Our Crew
Ocean Light Adventures is owned by Jenn Broom and operated by a small team of family and friends, including Chris Tulloch, Barrett Johnson, Luise Frommer and Rhea Farwell. They continue to get energized by introducing people from all corners of the globe to the beautiful BC coast. In 2006 Chris Tulloch joined the Ocean Light Adventures team and he has helped grow our company success. More recently Barrett began working with us and now Chris and Barrett share the skipper duties. Together they have over 40 years of coastal sailing experience. We are also fortunate to have a very talented resource staff working with us, the number of which varies annually and with the evolution of our adventure tour program. These individuals enhance our program and allow us more diverse offerings.
Jenn is the company owner and the wind behind the sails of Ocean Light Adventures. She has been a first mate, cook, guide and crew with the company since 1991 and continues to thrive in her coastal lifestyle. Jenn ensures your stay on the Afterglow I is comfortable, enjoyable and memorable. Delicious, nutritious food flows out of Jenn’s galley and she keeps the boat ship shape, warm and dry. When not busy tending to the needs of her guests you will find Jenn paddling her kayak or riding her exercise bike on the deck. Year ‘round Jenn heads up the portable office: coordinating trips, answering emails, and continually striving to improve the program and offerings of Ocean Light Adventures.

Barrett inspires calm and confidence in the people who surround him. The lakes and rivers of his Ontario youth gave way to the islands and beaches of the west coast in 2002. First drawn to the surf in Tofino, and eventually working his way north to Haida Gwaii. He has been leading groups on wilderness adventures since 2004. As a certified captain, sea kayak guide instructor, wilderness first responder and member of his local volunteer marine rescue society, he is always focused on safety and sound decision making. Barrett has spent the last 15 years working mainly in Gwaii Haanas in the southern part of Haida Gwaii, also working as an “at sea observer” for the prawn fishery each spring. He has a huge respect for the ocean and it’s creatures, and has spent years learning the natural and cultural history of the west coast. Teaching comes naturally and he loves to get people involved in the experience – to share and learn together. He passes the winters working as a carpenter, and spending as much time as possible with his family.”

Luise brings cheerful enthusiasm and a wealth of experience and skill to her galley and deck duties on the Afterglow I. She has always loved cooking and baking, learning skills as a young girl and adding to them all her life in a variety of settings around Coastal British Columbia. Never far from boats and the water, Luise was an early sea kayaker and has gone on to complete sailing voyages around Vancouver Island and on south to California. The Afterglow I gives Luise a chance to live her dreams of cruising remote waters , seeing magnificent wildlife and creating wonderful meals to share with others. She looks forward to making guests feel as at home on the Afterglow I as she is herself.

Rhea is excited for her second season as deckhand aboard the Afterglow. Though she grew up on the prairies of Saskatchewan, she was dreaming of the sea and fascinated by marine life as a child. She made her way out west in 2018, drawn to the sea and wilderness, which she now enjoys in work and play. In the winter she works as an industrial scaffolder on large vessels, and year-round prioritizes staying active exploring the flora and fauna of the mountains and coast. With a keen eye for keeping things running smoothly, safely, and orderly, Rhea strives for an ethic of care and attention to the Afterglow and her guests.

Jenn’s daughter Sarah was born on-board the Ocean Light II and began her first charter season on the BC Coast at the age of 5 months. She is totally at home on the boat and loves meeting new people and showing them the wonders of her coastal world. These days she is seen less often on the Afterglow as she is busy persuing her own passions. Hopefully she will make some guest appearances on some trips in the future…
